OBS fall mixed sale opens with strong preferred session

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. kicked off its two-day fall mixed sale with a consignor-preferred session on Tuesday that posted gains in gross, average, and median compared with last year’s opener, headlined by a six-figure weanling daughter of current leading North American sire Kitten’s Joy.

OBS reported 116 horses sold on Tuesday for gross revenues of $2,631,000, a 51 percent increase compared with the consignor preferred session in 2012, when 123 horses sold for $1,740,900. Tuesday’s average price of $22,681 jumped 60 percent, and the $18,500 median spiked 68 percent. The buyback rate was 16 percent on Tuesday, improved from 18 percent last year.

The Brogden family’s Machmer Hall of Paris, Ky., bought the session topper, a weanling Kitten’s Joy filly, for $110,000. Consigned by Top Line Sales, agent, the filly is out of the Proud Citizen mare Brickyard Gal. Her second dam, the winning A.P. Indy mare Miss Brickyard, is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Miss Houdini, who is the dam of Arkansas Derby winner and freshman sire Papa Clem.

Another weanling filly secured the opening session’s second-highest price, as Jumping Jack Racing bought a daughter of Darley stallion Discreet Cat for $75,000. The filly, consigned by Kerri Szegi, agent, is from a female family full of Grade 1 winners that has received much attention this year. She is out of the War Chant mare De Danann, and her second dam, the Forty Niner mare Puestra, is a half-sister to champion Queena and Grade 1 winner Chic Shirine. The latter is granddam of this year’s Wood Memorial and Haskell Invitational winner Verrazano.

The session’s top-priced broodmare sold for $72,000 to central Kentucky-based Hunter Valley Farm. Ribbon Taffy, a 4-year-old daughter of Hard Spun, won twice and earned $37,832 during her racing career. She is out of the Premiership mare Partyship and is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Barrier Reef, stakes-placed winners Artic Party and Kissin Party, and stakes producer Tight Lipped. Ribbon Taffy sold in foal to Spendthrift Farm stallion Into Mischief.

The OBS fall mixed sale concludes with an open session on Wednesday, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Eastern.
