OBS fall mixed: Mixed returns in consignor select session

The opening consignor select session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. fall mixed sale closed on Tuesday with declines in gross and average sale price from the 2014 edition, but an improved median and lower buyback rate.

A total of 104 horses brought $1,553,700 on Tuesday, down 32 percent from last year’s consignor select session when 138 horses sold for $2,297,900.

The average sale price fell 10 percent from $16,651 to $14,939, while the median rose 3 percent from $8,750 to $9,000. The buyback rate fell to 27 percent after last year’s consignor select session finished at 34 percent.

One horse changed hands for six figures during the select session, tying with last year. Six sold for $50,000 or more on Tuesday, down from 10 in 2014.

Joy Ventures LLC purchased the session-topper, stakes-winning broodmare prospect Puddifoot, for $120,000.

The 4-year-old daughter of Red Giant won three of 13 starts during her on-track career for earnings of $163,500, highlighted by a win in the Juvenile Filly Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Earlier this year, she finished third in the Minaret Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.

Bred in Florida by Peachtree Stable, Puddifoot is out of the Grade 3-winning Cee’s Tizzy mare Theresa’s Tizzy, whose seven winners from nine foals to race also includes Grade 3 winner Got the Last Laugh and stakes-placed Lotto Ticket. She is from the family of stakes winners Lesters Boy, Excessive Theresa, Theresa’s Year, Jam’n Jackson, and Richard’s Boy.

Kaizen Sales consigned Puddifoot as agent.

The session’s highest-priced weanling, and the second-most expensive offering of the session, was a filly from the first crop of stallion Treasure Beach who sold to Gail Thompson for $75,000.

Bred in Florida by Patricia Generazio, Helen Barbazon, and Joseph Barbazon, the filly is the third foal out of the winning Hennessy mare Outstanding Henny. Her extended family includes Grade 3-placed stakes winners Outstanding Info and Farno. Pleasant Acres Farm consigned the filly as agent.

Kaizen Sales was the session’s leading consignor by gross, with nine horses sold for a combined $250,000, led by the session-topper. The lone purchase of Puddifoot also made Joy Ventures the day’s leading buyer.

The OBS fall mixed sale continues Wednesday with open and horses of racing age sessions, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Eastern.
