OBS August: Hips to watch


Following are some of the horses to watch in the selected portion of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. August yearling sale based on their pedigrees and the past auction performance of notable family members. Conformation, physical characteristics, veterinarian records, and late pedigree updates were not taken into consideration.

Hip No. 18, Awesome Express, dk. b. or br. f., Awesome of Course—Express Fashion, by Private Express, consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, agent.
A half-sister to Grade 2 stakes winner Express Tour and stakes winner Kitty Cat Express. Dam Express Fashion has had eight winners from nine runners.

Hip No. 38, b. f., Uncle Mo—Joyful Wager, by Valid Wager, consigned by M.E.C.C.O. Sales, agent.
Four-time stakes winner Wild About Marie is a half-sister to this filly. The second dam has produced Grade 3-placed stakes winner Blackjack Boy and stakes-placed Winning Wonder. Joyful Wager, a producer of three winners from five foals to race, has had three foals sell for $85,000 or more.

Hip No. 46, ch. c., Kantharos—Leah’s Angel, by Caller I. D., consigned by Abbie Road Farm, agent.
Leah’s Angel has had seven winners from nine foals to race, including Grade 3 winner Expect an Angel and stakes-placed Tontine Too. Extended family includes Grade 2 winners Enumerating and Potesta; stakes winners Morris Code and Katzen; and Peruvian Group 1-placed Kabu.

Hip No. 51, b. f., Mineshaft—Limited Partner, by El Prado, consigned by Pelican State Thoroughbreds, agent.
Shine Again, a two-time Grade 1 winner and earner of $1.27 million, is the second dam of this filly, whose catalog page also features Grade 2 winner Shiny Band and multiple stakes winner Colony Club. The filly is the third foal out of Limited Partner.

Hip No. 68, dk. b. or br. c., Bernardini—Miss Barrister, by Deputy Minister, consigned by Stuart Morris, agent.
The colt’s catalog page includes Grade 2 winner Indian Firewater, Grade 3 winner Four Flings, and stakes winners Bay Barrister, Pas by Pas, Go to the Ink, Bishop’s Fling, and Hold the Giant. Half-brother Malad, by Indian Charlie, sold for $250,000 at the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale.

Hip No. 96, ch. c., First Dude—Poseida, by Pick Up, consigned by Beth Bayer, agent.
Chilean classic winner Poseida has had five winners from seven runners, including stakes-placed Sequoia Warrior. Chilean Horse of the Year and multiple U.S. Grade 1 winner Cocoa Beach is on the page as well. The colt sold for $45,000 as a weanling at last year’s Keeneland November breeding stock sale.

Hip No. 104, b. f., Pioneerof the Nile—Qu’ Appelle, by A.P. Indy, consigned by Imagine…
Dam Qu’ Appelle has produced five winners from seven foals to race, and the catalog page includes champion Davona Dale and Grade 1 winner Seek Gold. The filly was a $28,000 buyback as a weanling at last year’s Keeneland November sale.

Hip No. 117, dk. b. or br. f., Big Drama—Sanctioned, by Maudlin, consigned by Sharon Biamonte, agent.
The filly is a half-sister to Grade 3-placed stakes winner Tiger Belle, stakes winner D’nied Permission, and Grade 3-placed Remembertobreathe.

Hip No. 131, gr. or ro. f., The Factor—Silver Cub, by City Zip, consigned by Summerfield, agent.
The third foal out of stakes winner Silver Cup, from the first crop of The Factor, and from the family of Grade 2 winner Dixie Luck and multiple stakes winners Silver Heart and Aspenglow.

Hip No. 144, ch. f., Speightstown—Split Trois, by Dubawi, consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, agent.
The first foal of French Group 3 winner Split Trois is a winner, and this is her second foal. The extended family includes German Group 2 winner Auenklang and stakes winner Auenweise. The filly was a $25,000 purchase as a short yearling at this year’s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale.

Hip No. 146, gr. or ro. f., Macho Uno—Starship Voodoo, by Roar, consigned by Journeyman Bloodstock Services, agent.
Starship Voodoo is the dam of two winners from three foals to race, including stakes-placed Starship Zorro. The catalog page also features Grade 1 winners Voodoo Dancer and Pool Play and Grade 3 winner Dancing Solo.

Hip No. 153, dk. b. or br. f., Kitten’s Joy—Sweet Kassidy, by Saint Ballado, consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, agent.
Sweet Kassidy’s three winners from six foals to race include stakes winner Saint Prado and Puerto Rican champion Sweet Kitten, both full siblings to this filly. Multiple Grade 3 winners Ski Dancer and Southern Tradition are farther down the page.

Hip No. 191, dk. b. or br. f., Broken Vow—Baldomera, by Doneraile Court, consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, agent for BryLyn Farm.
She is a full sister to Grade 3 winner Circle Unbroken and a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Big John B. The dam, Baldomera, is a Grade 3-placed multiple stakes winner. At last year’s OBS August sale, a half-sister by Yes It’s True brought $150,000.

Hip No. 193, Bear She Goes, b. f., Bernardini—Bear Now, by Tiznow, consigned by TdM Sales, agent.
The fourth foal out of Canadian champion Bear Now, from the family of Grade 2 winner Icecoldbeeratreds and stakes winners Controlled, Inexcessive Speed, and Ride Me Fast. The filly has been offered twice at auction, finishing under her reserve both times: first at the 2014 Keeneland November sale for $140,000, then as a short yearling for $80,000 at the Keeneland January sale of horses of all ages.

Hip No. 206, ch. c., Kantharos—Carsomatic, by Carson City, consigned by Kaizen Sales, agent.
All three of Carsomatic’s runners are winners, including stakes winner Carphonic and stakes-placed Ocarson. The extended family includes Grade 2 winner Chieftan’s Command, Grade 2-placed multiple stakes winner Fiddlers Patriot, and multiple stakes winner Barbara’s Nemesis.
