OBS August: First open session continues downward trend

The first open session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s August yearling sale posted declines, a trend also seen during the sale’s opening select session.

OBS reported a total of 258 horses sold during Wednesday’s open session for revenues of $3,411,000. That marked a 26 percent decrease from the first open session of the 2013 sale, when 269 yearlings sold for $4,638,600.

The average sale price fell 23 percent compared with last year’s second overall session, from $17,244 to $13,221, while the median price fell 42 percent from $15,000 to $8,750.

The buyback percentage soared to from 11 percent at the comparable 2013 session to 28 percent on Wednesday.

Topping the session was a Trappe Shot colt, who sold to agent Ciaran Dunne for $140,000, making him the only horse to bring six figures on Wednesday.

The bay colt is out of the winning Unbridled’s Song mare Good Witch Glinda, who is the dam of two winners from three foals to race. Wednesday’s transaction made the colt the most expensive foal out of Good Witch Glinda to sell at public auction. Bred in Kentucky by Dapple Bloodstock and consigned as agent by Stuart Morris, the colt is from the family of Grade 1 winner Broom Dance, Grade 2 winner Pumpkin Moonshine, and Grade 3 winners End Sweep and Tingle Stone.

Beth Bayer was the session’s leading consignor by gross, with 25 yearlings sold for a combined $366,500. Her consignment was led by a New York-bred Posse filly out of stakes winner D’ Country who sold to Patrice Miller’s EQB as agent for Zayat Stables.

Dunne was Wednesday’s leading buyer, with his single purchase of the $140,000 session-topper.

After two sessions of the OBS August sale, a total of 428 horses have sold for revenues of $11,221,700. Last year’s opening two days grossed $12,343,600 from 412 horses sold, meaning two-day revenues have fallen nine percent in 2014.

The average sale price over the select session and first open session finished at $26,219, down 12 percent from the comparable period’s $29,960 in 2013.

The third and final session of the OBS August sale will be held Thursday, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Eastern.
