O'Brien, 'Giacometti' score

Trainer Aidan O'Brien won yet another of France's Group 1 races for 2-year-olds - his sixth in the last 10 to be run - saddling Alberto Giacometti for a head victory over Summerland in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud at Saint-Cloud in Paris on Saturday.

Alberto Giacometti was last in the field of 10 early, inched up to eighth place on the straight, and came wide on the turn to challenge Marshall and Summerland for the lead with a furlong and a half to run in the 1 1/4-mile race over going labeled "very heavy."

Summerland put up a staunch fight before jockey Mick Kinane was able to push Alberto Giacometti's nose in front a few strides from the wire. Marshall finished another two lengths back in third. Another O'Brien runner, The Great Gatsby, was fourth.

The only previous Group race winner in the field, the Andre Fabre-trained Graikos, trailed home a disappointing ninth.

O'Brien started four horses in the race, counting Delacroix, who was fifth, and Cougar, who was tenth.

"I chose to ride the winner because he won his maiden so well despite a slow pace," said Kinane. "But that was only nine days ago, and it's a big step up to a Group 1. He has a lot of pace, and he can only improve."

A homebred son of Sadler's Wells who is owned by Susan Magnier, Alberto Giacometti was timed in 2:25.90. Because Magnier owned or part-owned exactly half of the field, including the winner and runner-up, all five horses were coupled in the betting and went off as the 11-10 favorite.
