The purse for the Northlands Oaks has been boosted to $100,000, giving Northlands Park four six-figure stakes for its 72-day 2006 meeting, which begins June 23 and runs through Oct. 22. The 34-race stakes schedule, worth a total of $2.22 million, is headed, as usual, by the Grade 3, $300,000 Canadian Derby, a 1 3/8-mile race for 3-year-olds on Aug. 26. The only other significant change to the stakes schedule is in name only, as the Klondike now will be known as the City of Edmonton. The one-mile Northlands Oaks gives 3-year-old fillies their first of two cracks at a $100,000 pot, with the 1 1/16 mile Sonoma following Aug. 12. The Northlands Oaks also is one of four stakes - along with the Ky Alta, Bird of Pay, and Birdcatcher - that offer a total of $20,000 in bonuses for Alberta-breds who finish in the top three spots. The meet's other highlight is the $100,000 Speed to Spare, a 1 3/8-mile race for 3-year-olds and upward on Sept. 9.
