Oaklawn, Sam Houston ease Louisiana ship-in restrictions

Email

Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., and Sam Houston Race Park in Houston, which both had closed their stable areas to horses shipping in from Louisiana due to the equine herpesvirus positives at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, each issued updated ship-in policies Saturday.

Oaklawn will now receive horses from Delta Downs in Vinton, La., Evangeline Training Center in Carencro, La., and from locales in North Louisiana, provided they meet certain conditions. Those conditions include a health certificate with a specific statement signed by an "accredited veterinarian" and proof of vaccination for EHV-1 within a certain timeframe. Details are available from racing officials at Oaklawn.

As for horses that have been at Fair Grounds since Dec. 21, they will not be allowed on the grounds at Oaklawn until further notice, according to the policy put out by Oaklawn. The policy was made in conjunction with the Arkansas Racing Commission.

Sam Houston will begin accepting Louisiana horses that are not from Fair Grounds at 12:01 a.m. Monday, according to a notice from the track. A health certificate issued within 24 hours of arrival is required until further notice.

Horses from "unaffected barns" at Fair Grounds will be eligible to enter Sam Houston's stable area starting at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. A health certificate issued within 24 hours of arrival is required until further notice.

The health certificates in both cases must show proof of vaccination for equine herpesvirus during a specified timeframe. Details can be obtained from the racing office at Sam Houston.

Sam Houston has rescheduled the seven Texas Champions stakes that were postposted this weekend due to the equine herpesvirus positives at Fair Grounds. The new dates for the races are all in March. The $50,000 Bara Lass and $50,000 San Jacinto Turf Stakes will be run March 10. The $50,000 Yellow Rose Stakes and $50,000 King Richard will be run March 11. The $50,000 Groovy Stakes and $50,000 Spirit of Texas Stakes will be run March 13. The $50,000 Star of Texas Stakes will be run March 14.

Nominations for all the races will close Feb. 28, according to Sam Houston racing secretary Matt Crawford. The conditions and purses remain the same.
