Oaklawn: Ron the Greek possible for Oaklawn Handicap

Santa Anita Handicap winner Ron the Greek may run in next weekend's Oaklawn Handicap rather than wait until mid-June for the Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs.

Ron the Greek, the winner of the Santa Anita Handicap in his last start March 3, is being seriously considered for a start in the Grade 2, $400,000 Oaklawn Handicap on April 14, said his trainer, Bill Mott.

“We’re leaning in that direction,” he said Thursday. “We’ll peek at the weights, and breeze him, and see if all is good to go.”

Mott said the timing of the race is appealing for Ron the Greek.

“Initially we had talked about waiting for the Stephen Foster, but it seems to be a long time to wait because that race doesn’t run until the middle of June. So, we thought about having a look at this race. He’s doing very well, seems to have come back from the California race real good.”

Mott said if Ron the Greek runs, he will be ridden by Jose Lezcano.

Ron the Greek, who races for the partnership of Brous Stable, Wachtel Stable, and Jack T. Hammer, is at Payson Park in Florida. Mott said late last week that he knew of flights coming in Tuesday and Thursday.
