Rose to Gold, who picked off the second Grade 3 win of her career in the Honeybee at Oaklawn last Saturday, could make her next start in the Grade 3, $400,000 Fantasy here April 10, trainer Sal Santoro said. Her ultimate goal remains the Kentucky Oaks.
“The basic plan right now is to run in the Fantasy,” Santoro said. “We’ve got 64 points and almost $500,000 in the bank, so I think she’s pretty much guaranteed a berth in the Oaks. The only reservation I have is that between the Fantasy and the Oaks it’s only 23 days, and within that 23 days it’s going to involve shipping her to Churchill Downs.
“I originally thought about taking her back to Calder and training her up to the [Oaks], but then when I started thinking about doing that, I started thinking about the drastic weather change. So, we’ve pretty much decided that we’re going to stay here and we’re going to train with the intention of running in the Fantasy. As we get closer to the race, we’ll make a final decision. Rose will tell me if she wants to run. The signs with her are pretty straightforward. If she’s up to it, then we’ll go ahead and run her, then take it real easy with her between the Fantasy and the Oaks.”
Calvin Borel rode Rose to Gold for the first time in the Honeybee. She led throughout and earned a career-high Beyer of 97. Earlier in her career, Rose to Gold won the Grade 3, $500,000 Delta Downs Princess.
Best Bets
AQUINNAH returns to a route and she couldn't have found a much better spot as a horse who wants to be involved early, as the expected pace scenario figures to favor those runners with a little early zip and she appears to be quickest of them all out of the gate; should control the tempo, and that should lead to her running to her best figures. CHARMINGMEGAN has tactical speed and likes to win, a combination that makes her easy to like; should get first run at the top pick.
