NYRA stewards to explain decisions

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – An explanation of all stewards’ decisions regarding the official order of finish in races run at all three New York Racing Association racetracks will be made available to the public beginning with Friday’s opening day program at Saratoga.

The three stewards, one of whom is appointed by NYRA, a second by the New York State Racing and Wagering Board, and a third by the Jockey Club, will provide an explanation of the reasoning behind their decisions following all inquiries and objections whether or not any changes are made to the original order of finish. That explanation will immediately be forwarded to the track’s media department, which will post the information on both the NYRA television feed as well as on the new Steward’s Corner section on NYRA.com.

“The new policy is a big step forward in providing transparency of the stewards’ decision making,” NYRA president and CEO Charles Hayward said. “Millions of dollars are bet every day at NYRA tracks and customers should know why decisions are made in the stewards’ stand.”

Both racing and wagering board chairman John Sabini and James L. Gagliano, president and CEO of the Jockey Club, echoed Hayward’s sentiments.

“We’re thrilled to expand the mount of information available to the wagering public,” said Sabini.

“We are fully supportive of any efforts to improve communications to racing fans and commend NYRA and the NYSRWB for their efforts in this regard,” Gagliano added.
