N.Y. juveniles show quality

This year's 2-year-olds look like one of the deepest Empire State crops in years.

As of this weekend, eight New York-breds had won or placed in graded stakes, while two more had won open stakes worth $100,000 or more. Four of these are by state sires Read the Footnotes, Artax, or Freud.

"The stallion scene in New York is changing," said Jeffrey Cannizzo, executive director of New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc. "New York's foal crop year after year is improving in quality, not just quantity. The graded and open company wins in 2008 speak for themselves."

Cannizzo noted that New York stallion fees are quite reasonable within the context of solid progeny earnings.

Read the Footnotes is the sire of Cribnote and Rereadthefootnotes.

He stands at Sequel Stallions New York in Hudson, N.Y., where his fee for 2008 was $8,500.

An earner of $126,200, Cribnote has distinguished himself with placings in the Hopeful and Champagne stakes, both Grade 1 events in New York. He was bred by Red Diamond Stable and is out of Totebook, by Notebook.

Rereadthefootnotes, out of Re Re Be Be, by Sheikh Albadou, finished third in the Grade 3 Sapling Stakes and was bred by Becky Thomas and Lewis Lakin.

Artax stands at Fever Stallions in Coxsackie, N.Y., where his fee for 2008 was $3,500.

Leading the graded stakes group is the filly Doremifasollatido, winner of the Grade 2 Matron Stakes at Belmont Park. Bred by Edward Messina, she is a daughter of Bernstein out of Consider it Done, by Green Dancer. She also finished second in the Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes at Saratoga.

The filly My Magic Moment finished third in the Grade 3 Miss Grillo prior to winning the recent open Missymooiloveyou Stakes on the Belmont turf. Bred by Lawrence Goichman, the daughter of Forest Wildcat is out of Sari, by Cozzene. This is the family of the classy runners Eltish, Forest Gazelle, and Contredance.

Freedom Rings finished second in the Miss Grillo. Bred by Mike Shanley, the daughter of Proud Citizen is out of Dana's Wedding, by Compliance. She is a half-sister to Peg's Prayer, winner of a division of the New York Stallion Stakes series.

Dana's Wedding is a full sister to New York-bred Henny B., who placed in the Wadsworth Memorial.

Relatively Ready was third in the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes on the Belmont Park turf course. The son of More Than Ready was bred by Behrendt, Bloom, and Marquis and is out of the Parade Marshal mare Relativa. This is Relativa's third New York-bred winner.

The eighth member of the graded group is Segal, who finished third in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs. The son of Harlan's Holiday was bred by Becky Thomas and Tony Grey and is out of Boatman Road, by Lord at War.

Dagnabit and R Betty Graybull are open stakes winners from this crop.

Dagnabit, bred by Lansdon B. Robbins III and Tom Hanson, captured the $100,000 Tremont Stakes at Belmont Park. By state sire Freud, he is out of Cool Ghoul, by Silver Ghost.

Freud also stands at Sequel Stallions New York, where his fee for 2008 was $10,000.

Hey Darla is from the wonderful mare Greek Victress, whose family includes major winners Greek Answer, Perfect Sting, and Lawmaker.
