N.Y.-breds fare well at OBS juvenile sale

New York-breds commanded solid prices at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s 2-year-olds in training sale on Feb. 12.

Eight of the 10 juveniles offered sold, and they grossed $1,330,000, for an average of $166,250, a figure that exceeded the company's overall record sale average of $157,640. The top-priced New York-bred was a son of Hold That Tiger purchased for $400,000 by Steve Klesaris for Puglisi Racing. At the Feb. 3 under-tack show, he turned in a quarter-mile work in 20.80 seconds, the best of 18 such works at the distance.

Consigned by W.D. North Thoroughbreds, agent for Bowling, Dodd, and North, the colt is out of the Gulch mare French Factor. French Factor's dam, French Binnana, is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner and former New York sire Jose Binn.

New York-bred sire Read the Footnotes, who retired to stud in New York and stands at Sequel Stallions North in Hudson, N.Y., had an outstanding sale. His three offerings, all New York-breds, grossed $400,000 for an average of $133,333.

Read the Footnotes's stud fee for this crop, his first, was $8,500 and his 2008 fee remains at that level.

Topping his trio was a filly consigned by Sequel Bloodstock (Becky Thomas), agent, and purchased by Zayat Stable for $220,000. She is out of Fit Right In, by Out of Place.

Fit Right In is a half-sister to stakes-placed New York-bred filly Don't Mind Me, from a family that includes multiple stakes winner and graded-stakes-placed Gallant Step.

A colt by Read the Footnotes was purchased by Padua Stables for $150,000 from the consignment of Leprechaun Racing, agent. He is out of Oneexcessivenite, by In Excess.

Oneexcessivenite is a half-sister to Favored One, winner of the Grade 2 Princess Stakes.

Read the Footnotes is a 7-year-old son of Smoke Glacken who captured the Remsen Stakes and Fountain of Youth Stakes.

The second highest price for a New York-bred at OBS also was consigned by Sequel Bloodstock, agent. Padua Stables paid $235,000 for the colt, a son of Harlan's Holiday out of Boatman Road, by Lord at War.

State sire Freud had a single offering at OBS and it was a filly that sold for $110,000 to Felix G. Norat from the consignment of Sequel Bloodstock, agent. She is out of the Diablo mare Val's Diablo.

Val's Diablo is a full sister to stakes-placed Diablo's Addition.
