Numbers mixed for Ellis meet

Purse levels and ontrack handle and attendance remained virtually the same as last year at the 2001 Ellis Park summer meet that ended Monday. Meanwhile, all-sources handle rose 5.5 percent to over $125.6 million, for an average of more than $3 million per day at the 41-day meet.

Daily purses averaged $188,546, down less than one-half of 1 percent from last year. Average attendance of just over 2,900 was up less than 1 percent, while average ontrack handle of just over $400,000 (including whole-card imports) also was up less than 1 percent.

Bernard Flint earned his ninth Ellis Park training title with a victory on the final day of the meet that snapped a three-way tie between Flint, Bob Holthus, and Gary Patrick. Flint, who ended the meet with 13 wins, has won seven titles outright and tied for two more.

Jockey Jon Court earned his fourth consecutive riding title with 56 wins.
