Nucky stays perfect by taking West Texas Futurity

Trainer Justin Joiner collected his second six-figure stakes victory for Quarter Horses within the past 15 days when his 2-year-old gelding Nucky delivered as the slight favorite in Sunday’s Grade 2, $198,924 West Texas Futurity at Sunland Park.

Nucky ($6.40), who set the fastest qualifying time in trials while making his career debut on March 20, ran 300 yards in 15.052 seconds under jockey L. Salvatore Martinez to prevail by three-quarters of a length over 5-2 second choice Pampered Jess. Tf Im That Guy got third by a neck over Fire Oak Corona.

Joiner also won the $191,284 West Texas Derby with Temptin Destiny on March 28.
