Northlands Park: Smart Promotion needing new rider for Canadian Derby

Trainer Robertino Diodoro is hoping Nate Smith will replace Fernando Perez aboard Smart Promotion for Saturday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park. Perez is reportedly out for a few weeks after cracking a couple of ribs when he went down in a spill Friday night.

“Nate was there when I needed him at Turf Paradise, and I think he would suit the horse perfectly,” Diodoro said. “I would like to see him ride the horse, but I’ll leave the final decision to his owners.”

Smith guided Najran Breeze to a 12-length front-running win for Diodoro in the $50,000 Western Canada on June 15. The undefeated Smart Promotion was involved right from the start in all three of his starts and could be the one they have to run down in the 1 3/8-mile derby. In his last race, Smart Promotion went around three turns for the first time and easily won the $50,000 Count Lathum at Northlands on July 29. They will be going around four turns in the Canadian Derby. Smart Promotion is owned by Rick Wiest.

In other derby developments, trainer Dave Forster is having second thoughts about entering Go for Guinness, who is coming off 6 1/2-length win in the B.C. Cup Stellar’s Jay on Aug. 5.

Without Go for Guinness, it sill looks like a full field of 12 horses will be entered Wednesday morning.

D M Runaway moving up

D M Runaway might be good enough to handle the jump into open company when he runs in a $12,500 claiming race that will serve as Wednesday’s feature. The one-mile race for 3-year-olds and up drew six horses and goes as race 7 on an eight-race card that begins at 6 p.m. Mountain.

Trained by Deryle Mullaney, D M Runaway has won three of his last four races, and in 10 career starts the only time he finished worse than third was in his debut going 3 1/2 furlongs in 2011. He didn’t win last year, but he started his 4-year-old season with a win in a $7,000 maiden claiming race going six furlongs May 31. He just missed when he stretched out to a mile in his second start before winning his next two races. He is coming off a two-length score for $7,000 in a one-mile conditional claiming race July 26.

Ismael Mosquiera replaces Jorge Espitia aboard D M Runaway. Espitia will be serving the last of a three-day suspension he received for careless riding.

Rise to Glory looks like the main threat to D M Runway.
