Risky Call broke sharply and after dueling with Tony the Tank through quick fractions went on to win the $50,000 Canadian Juvenile by an easy 5 1/2 lengths over Just Gone at Northlands Park on Monday. He paid $6.40 as the slight favorite in the one-mile race for 2-year-olds.
Risky Call disposed of Tony the Tank after six furlongs and held a 6 1/2-length lead at the top of the stretch. With apprentice jockey Rafael Zenteno Jr. aboard, Risky Call was never threatened while easily holding off Just Gone who rallied from off the pace. Rockport Street finished third.
The final time was 1:42.40.
Risky Call is trained by Joan Petrowski. It was his third win in a row and the first time he went around three turns.
Freedom of the City: Silkworm draws off
Heavily favored Silkworm overcame a slow start to win the $50,000 Freedom of the City for 2-year-old fillies. She paid $3.30.
After breaking slowly with leading rider Rico Walcott aboard, Silkworm moved into contention on the stretch turn, went three wide while making her winning move around the turn, and drew off to win by 5 1/2 lengths. Zippy Request set the pace and held on to finish second. Marry Me Vicky finished third.
The final time was 1:43.20.
Best Bets
CLASSIC BRYCE went to the sidelines after tanking in the 2012 Canadian Triple Crown, and has worked solidly for a trainer who's begun the meet with a bang. The beautifully-bred son of Grand Slam is out of G2 turf stakes winner Classic Stamp, who's the dam of a grass winner. SEEKINGTHEDIAMOND ended a streak of seconditis when he romped in a recent maiden special around two turns on the grass at Churchill. The late bloomer possesses a fitness edge on most of these, and should be in the thick of the battle.
