Northlands Park: Breakdown, two scratches make Classic Alley Kat's job easier in Wild Rose

Email

VANCOUVER, British Columbia  - Classic Alley Kat had things her own way while posting a 1 1/2-length win over Alywin in the $50,000 Wild Rose Handicap for fillies and mares at Northlands Park on  Sunday.

The original field of six was reduced to four when Notoriously and Malakwa scratched and then only three horses were involved in the six-furlong race after Shakenwithanolive went down coming out of the starting gate. Shakenwithanolive appeared to stumble and then her hind end gave out just after she left the starting gate. According to her trainer, Robertino Diodoro, Shakenwithanolive broke her back and had to be euthanized.

“It is heart-breaking, “ said Diodoro.

Jockey Jorge Carreno was reportedly shaken and took off his mount in the last race.

With Shakenwithanolive out of the race Classic Alley Kat was the only true speed in the field and she was allowed to set uncontested fractions of 23.80 and 46.80 seconds with Fernando Perez aboard. She easily held off the late move of Alywin ,who trailed early. Miss Victoriana stalked, but couldn’t keep up and finished third.

Final time for the race was 1:11.40. Classic Alley Kat was running at Northlands for the first time. She came into the race off of back-to-back stakes wins at Hastings.

Trained by Elizabeth Stolzenberg, Classic Alley Kat paid $4.90.
