Northlands Park: Aces Again, Canaveral Leader upset closing-day stakes


Aces Again and Canaveral Leader pulled off upsets in the two closing-day stakes Monday at Northlands Park.

Aces Again paid $38.80 for his front-running win over the 1-2 favorite Silver Baubles in the $50,000 Harvest Gold Plate for 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/16 miles.

Mario Velazquez put Aces Again on the lead right from the start in the Harvest Gold Plate and held off a stalking Silver Baubles to win by two lengths. For Cash chased the winner before tiring to finish third.

Aces Again is trained by Amanda Gregory.

The final time was 1:44.63

Canaveral Leader, last early, took advantage of a hotly contested pace to win the $50,000 Duchess of York for fillies and mares. She paid $21.

In the 1 1/16-mile Duchess of York, Shannon Beauregard bided her time aboard Canaveral Leader while the 5-2 favorite Tell Me Lies was dueling through quick fractions with Yankee Candy. Canaveral Leader was still last at the quarter pole but finished full of run while going four wide to win by 2 1/4 lengths over Salsa Express who stalked the pace and took a one-length lead into the stretch. Lies faded to finish last.
