Northlands: Inhisglory by a nose in Count Lathum

Inhisglory capped off a perfect day for trainer Craig MacPherson and jockey Richard Hamel with a desperate win over Freedoms Traveller in the $50,000 Count Lathum for 3-year-olds at Northlands Park on Saturday. Hastings-based MacPherson and Hamel also won the first race with Tommy D’Horsey and the sixth with Belle Evangeline.

Inhisglory, ($3), stalked Boomtown Brat through honest fractions of 23:40 and 47.80 seconds before engaging the leader after six furlongs in 1:14 flat. After taking over the lead in the 1 1/16-mile feature, he was collared by Freedoms Traveller on the stretch turn and the two raced as a team through the stretch, with Inhisglory holding off Freedoms Traveller by a nose. Call Me Later made a late move to finish a distant third.

Final time for the race was 1:45.80.

The Count Lathum is the final local prep for the Grade 3, $300,000 Canadian Derby, which is scheduled for Aug. 20.

Earlier on the card, Dougs Buddy scored a six-length front-running win over Congrats Man in the $50,000 Edmonton Juvenile. In control of the race right from the start with Rico Walcott aboard, Dougs Buddy set uncontested fractions of 22.80 and 46.20 seconds before drawing off to post a final time of 1:12 flat in the six-furlong dash.

Trained by Joan Petrowski, Dougs Buddy was sent off as the solid favorite and paid $4.40 to win.
