Northlands: Commanding Ace has much in his favor

Commanding Ace will be a short-priced favorite when he runs in a $30,000 claiming race that will serve as the feature race on Canada Day at Northlands Park Friday. The 6 1/2-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up drew five horses and goes as the fifth race. Post time for the nine-race holiday card is 1 p.m. Mountain.

Trained by Jim Meyaard, Commanding Ace is coming off of a tough loss to Western Woods in a six-furlong claiming race for $30,000 June 15. Breaking alertly, Commanding Ace chased Western Woods right from the start but couldn’t get past the front-runner. Nonetheless, he finished over six lengths clear of Rule by Force, who made a late move to get up for third. The 89 Beyer Speed Figure he earned stands out in this field.

In his previous start Commanding Ace scored an easy 4 3/4-length win over Alarico in a $20,000 claiming race May 27.

Usual rider Rico Walcott will likely put Commanding Ace in the race right from the start and he should be able to wear down the other speed.

Cook Kahuna is dropping to a new low and should appreciate the class relief. Trained by James McCullough, Cook Kahuna will be running in a straight claiming race for the first time. The 4-year-old homebred faded badly after trying to keep up with Salt Flat Speed in the $50,000 Journal Handicap on June 11. He may want more distance at this point in his career.

Prior to finishing third in a $40,000 optional sprint at Northlands May 22 he won going a mile and an eighth on the turf in a $32,000 optional race at Tampa Bay on April 23.

Tease the Tiger forced the pace and held on well to finish second in a $30,000 claiming race going six furlongs June 1 and should be part of the pace.

Bad Medicine made a strong late move to finish a neck behind Mootoo in a $22,000 claiming sprint June 10 and should be heard from late.

Bent Tune will be trying to get untracked following a couple of dull efforts in $40,000 optional claiming races in his first two starts of the year.
