Northern Sunset, broodmare, dies

Northern Sunset, 1995 Broodmare of the Year and the foundation mare for Virginia Kraft Payson's successful homebreeding program, died Thursday at Payson Stud in Kentucky. The mare was euthanized following a stroke. She was 26.

Payson bought Northern Sunset, a daughter of Northfields and the Ballymoss mare Moss Greine, for $105,000 at the 1982 Keeneland January sale. Payson's plan was to breed her to Pleasant Colony, in whom Payson held a share. The mating proved successful time and again. The Pleasant Colony-Northern Sunset cross produced Irish and French champion St. Jovite, winner of the 1991 Irish Derby; multiple graded stakes winner Salem Drive; and multiple Grade 2 winner Lac Ouimet.

Northern Sunset also produced Grade 3-winning millionaire L'Carriere, Group 1-placed Norberto, Group 3-placed Laurentide, and stakes-paced Sun Princessa. She also is the third dam of 2002 Kentucky Oaks winner and 3-year-old champion filly Farda Amiga.
