Northern Scene sets course record


Northern Scene made a splash in his first start in his native Texas on Saturday night, when he shattered a course record at Retama Park while winning the feature on the richest card of the meet, the $100,000 Texas Hall of Fame Stakes. The mile and a sixteenth turf race was one of six retricted stakes worth $470,000. The card is a fixture at Retama, and it is designed to complement inductions into the track's Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame.

Northern Scene ($10) covered the distance over firm turf in 1:40.95, lowering the mark of 1:42 set by Far Side on Aug. 16, 2003. It was a huge win for Northern Scene, who for months had been pointed for the Hall, which is for 3-year-olds and up bred in Texas.

Northern Scene stalked pacesetter Charming Socialite through fractions of 23.60 for the opening quarter, 46.91 for the half-mile, and 1:10.19 for six furlongs. The eventual winner surged in the stretch for a length win over Charming Socialite. It was another three-quarters of a length in third to Agrivating General.

Lonnie Meche rode Northern Scene for owner Don Eberts, who also bred the son of Northern Baby. Morris Nicks trains the horse, whose other career stakes win came at his base of Louisiana Downs. Northern Scene has now won 6 of 18 starts and $178,730.

Josephine Abercrombie, Herbert Graham, Wayne Lukas and the filly Miss Princess were inducted into the Texas Hall in a ceremony prior to the races Saturday.

In other stakes on the program, Rockin' Kate set a course record for five furlongs on turf, when she led at every call to win the $40,000 Selma by three and a half lengths over Martys Expectation. Rockin' Kate covered the distance in 55.48 seconds, lowering the mark of 55.69 seconds set by Beach Heat on Aug. 24, 2003.

* Lake Mac Mac ($29) pulled the biggest upset of the card when he was a neck winner over Upstream in the $125,000 colts and geldings division of the Texas Stallion Stakes. Omar Rodriguez rode the winner for trainer Preston Adams.

* Kathy's Rocket ($10.80) led throughout for a six and a quarter length win over Cats Legend in the $125,000 fillies division of the Texas Stallion Stakes. Jeremy Beasley rode the winner for trainer W.T. Howard.

* Claudia's Angel ($4.20) stalked the pace than pounced for a length and a half win in the $40,000 Fiesta Mile. Terry Stanton was aboard the winner for trainer Paul Murphy.

* K.D. King ($4) dueled throughout and came away with a head win n the $40,000 Red McCombs. Jeremy Collier rode the winner for trainer Keith Dunaway.

* Attendance for the card was 6,897, and handle on the program was $996,628.
