No rest, no worries for 'Laura'

ALBANY, Calif. - Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is well aware of the training axiom espoused by the legendary Horatio Luro: "Don't squeeze the lemon dry."

Even though Somethinaboutlaura has run five times in the past four months, Hollendorfer is bringing her back Sunday for another start only two weeks after she won the $150,000 B. Thoughtful on a disqualification. Somethinaboutlaura appears the lone speed in Sunday's $75,000 Work the Crowd Handicap at Golden Gate Fields, which makes her look close to unbeatable.

Somethinaboutlaura, who has won more stakes (eight) than her five rivals have victories, figures to be an overwhelming favorite in the 1 1/16-mile turf test for California-bred fillies and mares.

Somethinaboutlaura comes into the race off a half-mile work in 48.80 on Wednesday.

"She's doing so good," Hollendorfer said. "She breezed nice and easy at Hollywood Park."

Somethinaboutlaura has 2 wins in 4 turf starts and hit the board in each of them. She won her lone start over the Golden Gate turf course.

That she gets in at 123 pounds, the same as everyone else in this weight-for-age event, helped prompt Hollendorfer's decision to make a quick comeback.

Were it not for Somethinaboutlaura, Beautiful Dixie might be in a good spot for her first stakes victory.

Trained by John Anderson, she is coming off a nose victory going a mile in a $62,500 optional claimer and is stakes-placed on the turf.

"She just kind of keeps coming, running them down gamely," Anderson said.

Although Anderson is expecting a good race from Beautiful Dixie, he also is realistic when assessing her chances for the upset

"She's better on the turf, but it's not like Somethinaboutlaura's a slouch on the turf," he said. "If they all run their race, Somethinaboutlaura should win. Everything looks her way."

But that didn't stop Anderson from entering.

"It would be nice to get more black type," he said. "For $75,000, there's still good money for second and third that will pay a lot of bills. There may be nothing for her for a while, so I'd hate to pass this race up."

Three in the Work the Crowd raced two weeks ago, including Gentle Charmer, who defeated Beautiful Dixie two races back.

Also in the race are Holiday Event, who lost to Beautiful Dixie in her last start three weeks ago, and Mamita Chula, who comes in with four weeks between races.
