No Fancy As good news for Sixthirty

EDMONTON, Alberta - Now that Fancy As is off to Winnipeg for Monday's Manitoba Derby, Sixthirty Joe heads a field of six in the $35,000 Count Lathum Handicap here at Northlands Park Saturday afternoon.

Sixthirty Joe, who drew the rail, will carry top weight of 120 pounds and have regular rider Renaldo Cumberbatch in the irons.

An Alberta-bred gelding, Sixthirty Joe has won three times this year in his initial season of racing and finished second or third behind Fancy As in his three other outings. In his last appearance here in the Ky Alta, Sixthirty Joe just failed to last and was beaten a head by Fancy As. That race was at 1 1/16 miles, and in Saturday's final prep for the Aug. 25 Canadian Derby he will be asked to carry his speed over 1 5/16 miles.

The Grade 3 Canadian Derby, worth $100,000, will be run at 1 3/8 miles.

Trained, owned, and bred by Deanne Davies, Sixthirty Joe will concede five to eight pounds to his opponents Saturday.

Kid Copper, ridden by Chris McGregor, is coming off a five-length allowance victory at a mile and has not been worse than third since his seasonal debut. He will carry 115 pounds, as will Harbour Ice.

Quincy Welch will ride Harbour Ice, who has won two optional claimers in a row after finishing up the track in the President's at Stampede Park May 13. He was claimed for $32,000 from his latest race.
