N.J. tracks to get new bets

Bettors will have new wagering options at Monmouth Park and The Meadowlands Racetrack with the introduction of the Choose Six and the Group Bet.

The Choose Six, which debuted at Delaware Park in July, is a variation on the pick six. In the Choose Six, the bettor can use any six races on the card, rather than having the track select the races to be used. All of the Choose Six bets on a given card form a single pool.

Players can bet into the Choose Six pool at any time, as long as at least six races remain on the program.

The Group Bet is a simpler concept that breaks each field into three groups: the morning-line favorite, the contenders, and the longshots.

The contenders and longshots, which are designated by the track, resemble field wagers in that a victory by any member in that group makes the wager a winner.

The new wagers have been approved by the New Jersey Racing Commission but cannot be initiated until the rules are published in the New Jersey Register, which chronicles the rules for any regulated industry in the state. That process could take several months.

The bets were developed by Scientific Games Racing LLC.
