Nine new names featured in Pool 2

Brother Derek is the 6-1 second choice in Pool 2 of the Derby Future Wagers. The mutuel field is the 5-1 favorite.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Lineups for Pool 2 in the Kentucky Derby and Oaks future wagers were released Tuesday by Churchill Downs, and true to the wide-open nature of each race, there are numerous changes from Pool 1 and no clear-cut favorites. Wagering into both pools begins Thursday at noon Eastern at racetracks and wagering outlets throughout North America.

Nine horses have been displaced from the Derby Futures, and eight from the Oaks, since wagers on Pool 1 were taken Jan. 26-29. Churchill spokesman John Asher said the nine new names for the Derby "are about as many as it gets" and that he could not recall as much turnover from one pool to another since the wager began in 1999.

"We've had eight before, but nine has got to be the very outer edge," said Asher.

Foremost among the dropouts from Pool 1 is Stevie Wonderboy, the 2-year-old champion who was sidelined by injury in early February. Other horses dropped from the roster of 23 separately listed wagering interests for Pool 2 were A.P. Warrior, Blazing Rate, Doctor Decherd, Half Ours, Henny Hughes, High Cotton, Sorcerer's Stone, and Your Tent or Mine.

The new names for Pool 2 are Corinthian, Great Point, Latent Heat, My Golden Song, Noonmark, Really Indian, Steppenwolfer, Strong Contender, and Sweetnorthernsaint.

The mutuel field, the 24th and final interest that includes all other 3-year-olds, has been listed as the 5-1 favorite by Churchill oddsmaker Mike Battaglia. The field closed as the favorite in Pool 1, as it has in all eight years in the bet's history. Brother Derek is the morning-line second choice for Pool 2 at 6-1.

Handle on Pool 1 was $552,627, third-highest in Future Wager history. The record was set last year, when $620,362 was bet into Pool 1.

Typically, Pool 2's handle is the lightest of the three pools offered each year, although the 2005 handle was $511,655, the highest ever for Pool 2.

As for the Oaks, Battaglia has made the field and Wild Fit the 6-1 co-favorites on his morning line for Pool 2. New names for the Oaks are Crystal Current, India, Joint Effort, Misty Rosette, Private World, Sierra Sweetie, Sweet Belle, and Sweet Sugaree. They replace Dance Daily, Daytime Promise, Seam Seeker, Sensation, Silvestris, Somethin-aboutbetty, Sugar Swirl, and Yachats.

Since Churchill first began Oaks futures in 2003, handle has been only about 15 percent of corresponding Derby pools.

Both pools close Sunday, with the Derby Futures closing at 6 p.m. Eastern and the Oaks a half-hour later. The futures are win-only wagers that carry a $2 minimum. Results are based on the May 5 Oaks and May 6 Derby.

Pool 3 for the Derby and Oaks is set for April 6-9. Lineups for all pools are set by Asher and by Brad Free and Mike Watchmaker of Daily Racing Form.
