Night Chapter invades to win

Night Chapter, from Southern California, swept in and took the money Saturday as he drew away to take Turf Paradise's $75,000 Cotton Fitzsimmons Handicap, the marquee event of a stakes tripleheader.

Owned and trained by Bobby Frankel, Night Chapter chased pacesetter Wait in Line early in the mile turf event, took command into the lane, and drew off to win by 2 1/4 lengths under Brice Blanc. Wait in Line stayed on and finished in a dead heat for second with another California invader, True Dancer, who rallied from midpack.

The favorite, Night Chapter ($4) ran the distance in 1:36.11.

In the $50,000 Glendale Handicap, Grat rallied from well back to romp. A California raider trained by Paddy Gallagher, Grat sat far back early in the 1 1/16-mile turf event and circled the field and drew off for a 5 3/4-length win under Danny Sorenson. She paid $11.80, running the distance in 1:41.86. The pacesetting Jubilee stayed on well to be a clear second. Bend, the 9-5 favorite, rallied from far back to get third.

In the $45,000 Swift Stakes, Family Guy closed furiously from far back to post a 22-1 stunner. Trained and co-owned by Eric Kruljac, Family Guy, under Leslie Mawing, powered home to win the 5 1/2-furlong race by nearly two lengths. Family Guy ($47.20) ran the distance in 1:02.23.
