FRANKLIN, Ky. – Nicky’s Brown Miss provided an emotional win for owner/trainer Savino Capilupi on Saturday in winning the $200,000 Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies, providing him with his first victory as a trainer and with a filly named after a revered uncle.

Nicky’s Brown Miss ($19.60), an invader from New Jersey who had been third most recently in the Colleen Stakes at Monmouth Park, appreciated a stretch-out to seven furlongs in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies, pulling away in the late going to win by 2 3/4 lengths.

“It’s more than I could ever ask for,” said Capilupi. “I told myself not to cry but I’m just so happy right now.”

As many winning horses had throughout Saturday at Kentucky Downs, Nicky’s Brown Miss ($19.60) utilized a powerful outside closing rally to earn a trip to the winner’s circle. She raced seven furlongs in 1:26.35 under jockey Francisco Torres.

She outkicked an inside-rallying Aunt Sherri, who finished a clear second over third-place Late Spring.

The race was marred by a fall from So Cal, who unseated jockey Julien Leparoux leaving the gate.. Leparoux escaped injury but the filly left in the horse ambulance. Stewards did not have an immediate update on her condition, and what injuries, if any, she might have sustained
