Newmarket gets new $1M races


Three new races for 2-year-olds sponsored by Tattersalls with a total value of 2.2 million pounds ($4.25 million) will be run at Newmarket beginning in 2008 and 2009. Graduates of the 2007 Tattersalls October yearling sale (Book One) will be eligible for the races, which will be known as the Tattersalls Millions.

Chief among them will be a seven-furlong race open to colts, fillies, and geldings worth 1 million pounds ($1.93 million). A seven-furlong race for juvenile fillies will carry a purse of 800,000 pounds ($1,544,000). Both races will be run for the first time at Newmarket's Cambridgeshire meeting in early October of next year.

Three-year-old graduates of the 2007 sale will be eligible for a

1 1/4-mile race, the Tattersalls Classic, worth 400,000 pounds ($772,000). It will have its first running at Newmarket's Craven meeting in April 2009.

Book One of the Tattersalls October yearling sale will be held from Oct. 9 through 12 in Newmarket and is expected to include 750 yearlings.
