Newbury: Russian Rhythm re-rallies

Russian Rhythm, headed in the stretch, came again to land the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, England, in her first start in seven months.

A three-time Group 1 winner at 3, Russian Rhythm led at the furlong pole but was headed by eventual third-place finisher Norse Dancer 100 yards out. Russian Rhythm regained the lead under Kieren Fallon, and held off the late charge of the 66-1 outsider Salselon to win by a half-length, getting the straight mile on good ground in 1:37.00 as the 3-1 favorite. A Kentucky-bred Kingmambo filly, Russian Rhythm was the only member of her sex in the 15-runner, $352,000 race.

Trained by Michael Stoute for Cheveley Park Stud, Russian Rhythm became the second filly to win both the 1000 Guineas and the Lockinge; Cormorant Wood won them in 1984 when the Lockinge was a Group 2 race.

Firebreak, recent winner of the Group 2 Godolphin Mile, ran fourth in the Lockinge, with Group 2 Sandown Mile winner Hurricane Alan fifth and last year's 2000 Guineas winner Refuse to Bend in eighth.
