Lethal Force, a 25-1 outsider, led throughout Saturday’s Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury Racecourse, holding off a late threat from top contender Strong Suit in the seven-furlong race.
Ridden by Adam Kirby, Lethal Force led by as many as five lengths in the straightaway race and was fully extended to win by a neck over Strong Suit, the 9-4 second choice in the field of nine. Alanza, a 9-1 chance, finished third. Soul, the 2-1 favorite, was sixth after racing as close as second with a quarter-mile remaining.
Lethal Force is trained by Clive Cox. An Irish-bred colt by Dark Angel, Lethal Force was fourth in the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. The Hungerford Stakes was his first stakes win.
Cox indicated that Lethal Force will be pointed for the Group 2 Park Stakes over seven furlongs at Doncaster on Sept. 15.
Deauville: Ridasiyna after fourth straight
Tuesday at Deauville, France, Ridasiyna can stretch her unbeaten streak to 4 races in the Group 2 Prix de la Nonette over about 1 1/4 miles on turf.
Owned by The Aga Khan and trained by Mikel Delzangles, Ridasiyna won the Group 3 Prix Chloe at Chantilly on July 1.
In the Prix de la Nonette for 3-year-old fillies, Ridasiyna faces six rivals, including Romantica, who was second in the Prix Chloe, and Dark Orchid, a stakes winner at Saint-Cloud in May.
Best Bets
MONCLOVA galloped out strongly after closing belatedly in her second trip postward May 26, from which the runner-up exited to graduate with a 68 Beyer. The daughter of Queen's Plate winner Niigon is bred to run long, and can break through with the stretchout from six and a half furlongs to a mile and a sixteenth. BE MIND PHIL is returning on short rest off a closing second in her debut, going a mile around one turn on the grass. She has a blend of speed and stamina in her pedigree.
