New Zealand sale opens with $600K Stravinsky filly

A Stravinsky-Jesmond’s Gift filly brought about $606,800 Monday to top the opening session of New Zealand Bloodstock’s national yearling sale series in Karaka, which saw across-the-board declines.

Te Akau Stud owner David Ellis signed for the filly on behalf of an unidentified client. Opening day, the first of two premier sessions, sold 170 yearlings for about $20,350,350, down 17 percent from last year’s gross for 180 horses. Average price was about $119,708, a drop of 12 percent, and median slipped 8 percent to about $98,400. The buyback rate rose from 25 percent last season to 30 percent.
