New York to fund test study

The New York Racing Association and New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association have agreed to provide funding to the laboratory at Cornell University in upstate New York to develop tests for performance-enhancing drugs, NYRA officials said Friday.

Charlie Hayward, NYRA's president, said the amount of funding would be "in the six figures," but that the total amount had not yet been determined.

NYRA's contribution will come from its operating budget, Hayward said. The horsemen's contribution will likely come from the purse account.

"We're trying to get out in front of the testing curve with some new protocols," Hayward said.

The laboratory at Cornell University, which currently conducts drug-testing in New York, is headed by Dr. George Maylin, who in the past has developed tests for the bronchodilator clenbuterol and the blood-enhancing drug erythropoietin.
