New Kentucky lab names head

Dr. Rick Sams, the current program director at the drug-testing laboratory at the University of Florida, will head up a new drug-testing laboratory being built in Kentucky, the company developing the lab, HFL Sport Science, said on Wednesday.

The Florida lab currently conducts all the drug tests for racing in Kentucky. HFL Sport Science will take over those duties in February, 2011, under a contract with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission reached late in 2009.

Sams has worked in the field of equine drug-testing and equine pharmacology for 30 years. Prior to taking the position at the University of Florida in 2006, he was the director of the Analytical Toxicology Laboratory at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Ohio State University for 26 years.
