New challengers for Bank Audit

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Though they both come out of poor performances in the same Grade 2 stakes last out, Comacina and Amazing Buy could be the main threats to probable favorite Bank Audit in Sunday's $65,000 Interborough Handicap at Aqueduct.

, the 119-pound highweight, is deserving of favoritism in the Interborough as she won this race and two graded stakes in 2005. Bank Audit comes off a third-place finish in the Garland of Roses, a race in which she was trying to get out a bit.

"She never really handled dirt [in her face] well and I think that had a lot to do with it,'' trainer Frank Laboccetta Jr. said.

After drawing post 2, Bank Audit may show more speed in the Interborough than she did in the Garland of Roses. Two races back, Bank Audit won a minor stakes in gate-to-wire fashion.

Laboccetta said Bank Audit came out of the Garland of Roses "better than she went in.'' He noted such was the case when Bank Audit finished fifth in the Bed o' Roses Handicap before coming back three weeks later to win the Grade 2 Genuine Risk.

are newly turned 4-year-olds whom Bank Audit has yet to face. Comacina, a daughter of Dixie Union, is 2 for 2 at six furlongs, including a victory in the Blue Sparkler Stakes at Monmouth Park on Sept. 18. Most recently, she finished fifth in the Raven Run at Keeneland.

Carlos Martin, who takes over the training duties of Comacina from Patrick Biancone, said Comacina came out of the Raven Run with an injured ankle. Martin said he had to wait three weeks before he could train Comacina, whose two most recent workouts over Belmont's training track look solid.

"She's doing very, very well going into the race,'' Martin said. "I know she's got to pick her game up a little bit, but if she does I think she will be competitive.''

Amazing Buy finished last in the Raven Run, but owner Ernie Paragallo said she had an allergic reaction to the Lasix shot she received that day. Last winter, Amazing Buy went 3 for 4 over the inner track with wins in the Busher and Busanda stakes. She shows two bullet works over the inner track leading up to this. Amazing Buy will break from post 8 under Harry Vega.
