Napravnik, Stevens to ride in Shergar Cup


Gary Stevens and Rosie Napravnik will represent the United States in the Shergar Cup jockey’s competition at Ascot, England, on Aug. 10, it was announced on Saturday.

Napravnik, 25, will be part of the Girls Team along with Lisa Allpress of New Zealand and Hayley Turner of Britain. Allpress, 37, has won more than 1,000 races and was the leading rider in New Zealand last year. Turner, 30, has won Group 1 races in Britain in recent years, and will captain the Girls Team.

Hall of Famer Stevens, 50, will captain the Rest of the World Team, which will include Yasunari Iwata of Japan and Brazilian Joao Moreira, who is currently riding in Singapore. Iwata, 39, has won the last two Japan Cups on Buena Vista and Gentildonna. Moreira, 29, has been the leading rider in Singapore for the last three years.

The two European teams, representing Britain and Ireland and continental Europe will be announced in late June, according to the event sponsor, Dubai Duty Free.

The Shergar Cup consists of six races over distances ranging from five furlongs to two miles.

Stevens is past his prime, why don't they get a young stud like Smith...or Albarado.... How about Saez???

Stevens may be old, but he is still a great rider and has experience to know when to move a horse. Great choice.
