Napravnik, Stevens to compete in Ascot’s Shergar Cup

American stars Rosie Napravnik and Gary Stevens are among 12 riders from around the world competing in Saturday’s Shergar Cup at Ascot Racecourse in England.

The six-race event features four teams of three riders – a Girls team, and riders representing Europe, Great Britain and Ireland, and a Rest of the World team.

Stevens is part of the Rest of the World team with Joao Moreira of Brazil and Yasunari Iwata of Japan, while Napravnik is on the Girls team with Lisa Allpress of New Zealand and Cathy Gannon of Great Britain.

The British and Irish team includes Kieren Fallon, James Doyle, and Kevin Manning, while the European team consists of Ioritz Mendizabal, Gerald Mosse, and Andrasch Starke.

The six races, all $46,000 handicaps, are run over distances from five furlongs to two miles and will have 10 runners. Each rider has five mounts, and a points tabulation determines the winning team.

* In France, the 5-year-old La Pomme d’Amour can defend her title in Saturday’s $174,000 Prix de Pomone for fillies and mares over 1 9/16 miles on turf.

The field of 10 also includes Ferevia, who was third in the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary at Longchamp in May, and Emirates Queen, who won the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks in England on July 6.

Hi Samatha My guess its that This 'series of races' today is not the Premier meet like The Royal Ascot meet is. (yes, TVG was ga-ga- over that each year) It's the first time I've seen a meet like this, though I have only been watching Int'l racing for a short period. This to me is an interesting set of race , more to highlight some off season races , until the next premiere races start to occur. Getting top jockeys around the world as teams to participate, is interesting , some may call it a gimmick, but if it draws a crowd and promotes International racing ...I'm all for it. Perhaps , HRTV has some coverage ( a service I don't have with my local cable company) Good Luck ! SR Vegas

This is probably spam, but this seems kind of stupid to me. When Royal Ascot was running earlier, TVG fell all over themselves to cover it. They promoted it for at least a couple weeks prior. They brought in people specifically for Royal Ascot and dragged Simon Bray on hours earlier than usual to talk over it. They aired almost every second of footage. Royal Ascot runs races this weekend....Nothing. They don't even acknowledge it's happening. They're California crew is so ga-ga for Gary Stevens, you'd think they be chomping at the bit to show him riding in Europe. Did they lose the deal to cover it or what?
