Mystic Soul rates to a win in Golden Poppy

ALBANY, Calif. - Favored Mystic Soul relaxed nicely behind a tepid pace and made a strong move once she got clear in the lane to capture the $75,000 Golden Poppy at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday.

Mystic Soul, second in the Grade 3 Miesque on the turf as a 2-year-old last year, faded after setting the pace in the Grade 3 Providencia in her last start.

Winning jockey Kyle Kaenel said he had talked with Mystic Soul's trainer, Jeff Mullins, on Saturday morning, "and he said she's kinda temperamental, but she came right back to me after the start."

Mystic Soul ($5.20) was fifth early in the 1o1/16-mile turf stakes for 3-year-old fillies, five lengths behind Comedy Girl, who set an easy pace, running 23.93 and 47.71 seconds through the opening half-mile.

"We were going slowly enough. I just wish she'd been a little more relaxed," said Comedy Girl's jockey, Russell Baze.

Rockella, sitting just off Comedy Girl, took the lead in the stretch as Kaenel, who had waited patiently, finally got room to swing out. Once in the clear, Mystic Soul made a quick burst and pulled away to win by four lengths in 1:43.15 with Rockella edging stablemate Round Trip Flight and Spenditallbaby in a three-way photo for second.

"About the three-eighths, she pulled me right to the leaders. I waited and eased her out in the stretch, and she took it from there," Kaenel said. "There were a lot of improving fillies in this race, but she's proven she can run already."

The victory was Mystic Soul's first stakes win. She was second in the Miss Grillo in her second career start before finishing second in the Miesque.

Mystic Soul, owned by Rancho San Miguel and Turf Express Inc., picked up $41,250, increasing her lifetime earnings to $114,121 with 2 victories in 7 career starts
