Mykindasaint gets perfect trip at 25-1

Mykindasaint, the longest shot on the board at 25-1, marched through the stretch Saturday to win the $75,000 Pan Zareta Handicap at Fair Grounds by 3 1/4 lengths.

Jockey Gerard Melancon had a bridle full of horse the whole trip and just waited for the moment to unleash Mykindasaint's devastating speed.

Donnie Meche sent Wild as Elle on a suicide mission through a quarter mile in 21.80 seconds. Others in the race tried but could not match that pace, but Melancon broke Mykindasaint alertly from her outside post and she tracked the pace without overextending herself.

"When I saw that 21 quarter go up I knew we had a chance," said Bubba Cascio, who trains Mykindasaint for Keith McKinney and Larry Lee.

Melancon sent Mykindasaint after the leader and the daughter of Saint Ballado stuck a head in front a half- mile out.

"She was in perfect position," said Melancon, who placed a wreath of flowers on Pan Zareta's grave in the Fair Grounds infield after the race. "I knew she was good right now because I worked her the other morning. I just tapped on her and she gave me another gear."

Mykindasaint extended her lead through the stretch as Vote Early got up for second, a length clear of Annika Lass, who rallied wide for third.

Mykindasaint ($52.40) covered the six furlongs in 1:10.83
