My Friend Dave back at the scene

PORTLAND, Ore. - Former Portland Meadows horse of the meeting My Friend Dave will make his first start at the current stand in Sunday's allowance feature, which has drawn a field of seven to compete at six furlongs.

My Friend Dave, a 6-year-old son of Can't Be Slew from the barn of trainer Corky Caron, won two stakes and was beaten just a nose by Demon Warlock in the Portland Meadows Mile en route to being named horse of the meeting at the 2004-05 stand. Returning for the 2005-06 meet, he posted only 1 win from 6 starts, a victory in the Oregon Sprint Championship, but he never finished worse than third.

My Friend Dave followed his Portland Meadows campaign with a pair of fourth-place efforts against allowance company at Golden Gate, then posted a second and a fourth in two outings against optional claimers at Emerald Downs before being turned out in June. He has posted four strong workouts for his return to action on Sunday, when he will be ridden by Javier Ortega.

My Friend Dave figures to get his strongest opposition from Crimson Design, a 5-year-old trained by Jim Fergason. Crimson Design won sprint stakes at both Portland Meadows and Emerald Downs as a 3-year-old, and he came back last season to win this track's Governor's Speed Handicap in March. Like My Friend Dave, Crimson Design has been off since June but has worked forwardly for Sunday's return. Leading rider Joe Crispin has the mount.
