Email

Bill Murphy, the president and general manager of Gulfstream Park since 2007, has resigned, the parent company of the track, Magna Entertainment, announced on Saturday.

The resignation was effective on Friday, Magna said in a release. Murphy will "assist with the management transition" until Gulfstream Park opens its 2010 meet on Jan. 3, Magna said. The company did not indicate if a replacement has been named.

Murphy has worked in the Thoroughbred industry for 38 years. He was named vice president of racing at Gulfstream in 2006, and was promoted to president and general manager the next year. Prior to being placed at Gulfstream, Murphy was the vice president and general manager at Thistledown racetrack in Ohio, another Magna track.

Magna filed for bankruptcy in March, and the company has been seeking buyers for most of its properties as part of its reorganization.

Murphy did not immediately respond to a cell-phone message on Saturday
