Mummify takes Singapore Airlines International Cup

Australian invader Mummify landed the $1.82 million Singapore Airlines International Cup at Kranji on Sunday as the lone American runner Star Over the Bay was pulled up lame.

The yielding ground did Star Over the Bay no favors. Tyler Baze had the Mike Mitchell-trained son of Cozzene in second behind defending champ Epalo, and while he did manage a narrow lead after three furlongs, he caved in at the 5/8's pole and was soon eased.

Meanwhile, the 5.70-1 Mummify rallied to catch recent Dubai Sheema Classic winner Phoenix Reach at the 16th pole, recording a three-quarters length victory under Danny Nikolic while traveling the 1 1/4 miles in 2:05 flat. The Irish-trained filly Alexander Goldrun was third, 2-3/4 lengths behind the runner-up. Epalo checked in eighth, beaten 10-1/4 lengths.

Trained by Lee Freedman, the victorious gelded 5-year-old son of Jeune had not won since Oct. 9 when he took the 1 1/4-mile Group 1 Yalumba Stakes from Grand Armee at Caulfield. In his most recent start at Randwick on April 2 Mummify had finished third behind Grand Armee and Delzao, the horse that finished eighth in Saturday's Champions Mile at Sha Tin, in the 1 1/4-mile Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
