Mucho Macho Man named Florida’s 2013 Horse of the Year

Multiple Grade 1 winner Mucho Macho Man was named Florida’s 2013 Horse of the Year on March 9 by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association.

The 6-year-old son of Macho Uno, along with the other state-bred award winners were honored at the 54th FTBOA Awards Gala at the Circle Square Cultural Center in Ocala, Fla.

Mucho Macho Man’s 2013 campaign featured two wins in five starts for earnings of $2,984,000. He staged a successful fall campaign at Santa Anita Park, first winning the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes, then the Breeders’ Cup Classic, avenging his runner-up finish in the latter the previous year. The horse was an Eclipse Award finalist for champion older male and Horse of the Year for his 2013 season.

Bred in Florida by John and Carole Rio, Mucho Macho Man was campaigned in 2013 by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and trained by Kathy Ritvo. Earlier this year, Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs purchased an undisclosed interest in the horse for both racing and breeding purposes.

Connections tied to Mucho Macho Man that also received awards included Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, who was the year’s leading owner by Florida-bred earnings, and Florida Broodmare of the Year Ponche de Leona.

Gilbert G. Campbell was named Florida’s Breeder of the Year for a second time, having previously earned the award in 1997. Based in Massachusetts, Campbell is the owner of Stonehedge Farm South in Williston, Fla. Among his leading runners in 2013 was Scandalous Act, Florida’s champion 2-year-old female of 2013, whom he campaigns as a homebred.
