Mr. Trieste shatters track record

Mr. Trieste made his sixth consecutive win a memorable one on Saturday, when he shattered a track record while winning the $65,800 by six and a half lengths at Zia Park in Hobbs, N.M.

Go Kitty Go finished second in the race, while it was another two and a quarter lengths back in third to Bayou on the Moon. Perfect Moon, a leading contender, was scratched from the Kachina.

Mr. Trieste ($4.60) tracked Skip and Go through an opening quarter in 23.40 seconds, overtook that one soon after a half-mile in 46.20 seconds, and went on to cover the distance over a fast track in 1:36.60. The previous record for the distance was 1:39.40. Zia opened its inaugural meet on Sept. 23.

Ken Tohill rode Mr. Trieste for trainer Gary Cross.

Mr. Trieste earned $39,480 for the Kachina win, and overall has compiled a career record of eight wins from 16 starts for earnings of $218,732. He races for Richard Lueck and was bred by Cobra Farm.
