Mr. Makah upsets Budweiser Emerald Handicap


AUBURN, Wash. - Mr. Makah and rider Gary Baze pulled off a stunning upset in Sunday?s $75,000 Budweiser Emerald Handicap at Emerald Downs, coming from last place in a field of seven to catch the heavily favored Sabertooth near the wire. Mr. Makah, a 5-year-old son of Majesterian trained by Bonnie Jenne, won by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:35.80 for the mile and returned $33.40 to win.

Sabertooth, who was favored at 4-5 after setting a world record in last month's FSN Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs, opened a six length lead after six furlongs in 1:09.60, but tired late over a dull surface that was running about a second slower than usual. Sabertooth held second by a nose over R. Associate, who finished a nose ahead of second choice Poker Brad.

Mr. Makah earned $41,250 for owners Frank McDonald and Friendship Stable, nom de course for Bonnie and Wally Jenne, bringing his career bankroll to $146,136 from four wins in 18 starts.
