Mr. Greeley colt leads first open session

EmailAn $800,000 Mr. Greeley colt led selling midway through session three at the two-week Keeneland September yearling sale Wednesday in Lexington, Ky.

Sheikh Hamdan al-Maktoum's Shadwell Estate Co. purchased the colt, a chestnut son of the Lure winner Matsue. That mare is out of multiple champion Kooyonga. The colt sold as Hip No. 711 from Peter O'Callaghan's Woods Edge Farm consignment.

Also on Wednesday, Dr. Naoya and Marie Yoshida, acting as agents for an undisclosed client, purchased a $700,000 Smart Strike colt out of the Wild Again mare Flashy. Robert Courtney Jr. and Ricky Stivers sold the colt through the agency of the Courtney family's Crestfield Farm.

Wednesday's session was the first open session at the auction, which runs through Sept. 25 and this year cataloged a record 5,553 yearlings. The select portion of the sale on Monday and Tuesday produced a top price of $3.7 million for an Unbridled's Song colt out of Secret Status. Coolmore agent Demi O'Byrne signed the ticket for the gray or roan colt, which was consigned by the Farish family's Lane's End Farm.
