Mountaineer: Crossing Point romps

Email

Crossing Point ($5.40) cruised to a surprisingly easy 5 1/2-length victory in the $76,500 Panhandle Handicap at Mountaineer Park, but the big news was the poor performances by highly regarded horses from the connections of owner Michael Gill and trainer Mark Shuman.

Boston Brat, the 3-5 favorite in the five-furlong Panhandle after breaking one track record and tying another during the winter at Gulfstream Park, did not show his customary high early speed and was eased to the finish. Stablemate Native Heir was among three scratches, leaving just four runners for the track's first stakes race of the season.

Two other runners from Gill and Shuman didn't fare much better. Unaccounted Affair finished fourth at 8-5 in a 1 1/4-mile starter allowance race and Harbor Pass finished a distant eighth at 3-1 in a one-mile allowance race.

Crossing Point, ridden by Ryan Fogelsonger, covered the five furlongs of the Panhandle in 58.47 seconds.
