'Mountain' looms overthe rest


WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Mountain Crest is the one to beat here in Saturday's R.C. Anderson Stakes. The Anderson, a one-mile race for

3-year-old fillies bred in Manitoba, will carry a purse of $27,500 and has drawn a field of 10.

The only multiple winner in the field, Mountain Crest has raced once this year, finishing second in the Chantilly here June 3. Trained by Darla Singh, Mountain Crest will be ridden by Rohan Singh.

o Trainer Don Korchinski scored his first stakes victory last Saturday when G and L Special took the restricted Manitoba. G and L Special has now earned $26,382 and has a lifetime record of 2-1-2 from seven starts. G and L Special returned $9 to win under rider Sean Deveaux.

o Ruben Solis's four-win performance last Sunday was highlighted by wins in the North Dakota Derby and the Canada Day.

In the restricted North Dakota Derby, Solis guided Northern Cheyenne to victory for owner-trainer Peter Davis. The win was Northern Cheyenne's first at a recognized racetrack from 11 starts and the $9,800 winner's share increased his recognized earnings to $20,350.

Northern Cheyenne returned $18.70 to win.

In Monday's Canada Day, Solis won aboard Okanagan Invader ($21) for owner-trainer William Smith. Okanagan Invader is now 9-6-4 from 28 starts, with the $16,500 winner's share increasing her lifetime earnings to $139,230.
