More Than Regal takes Zia Derby

More Than Regal picked up his fourth stakes win this year when he drove to a 2 1/2-length win over Guiding Hand in the $157,600 Zia Park Derby at Zia Park on Saturday. It was another length and a quarter back in third to Wait in Line.

More Than Regal ($2.60) settled in fourth early, as Guiding Hand led the field through an opening half-mile in 46.80 seconds. Guiding Hand continued to lead until the stretch, when he was overtaken by More Than Regal, who then went on to cover the mile and a sixteenth over a fast track in 1:47.20.

"I really didn't have much to do, just hang on," said Roman Chapa, who rode the winner for trainer Scott Blasi. "He's settled perfect. He's such a good horse."

More Than Regal earned $94,560 for the win, which was his fifth from 15 career starts. He has now earned $543,091. Earlier this year, More Than Regal won the $250,000 Iowa Derby, the Prairie Meadows Derby, and the Sportsman's Paradise. He is a son of More Than Ready, and races for Vinery Stables.

Guiding Hand and Wait in Line are stablemates, as both are trained by Chris Hartman.
