More to come for Dynaformer

LAS VEGAS - Ol' man river just keeps rollin' along. Dynaformer, a stakes winner from the very good 1985 foal crop, is having one of the best years in his long and successful career as a stallion, led, of course, by Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro.

Dynaformer raced at 2, 3, and 4, and his three stakes victories all came at age 3. His most important win was the Jersey Derby, then run on dirt at 1 1/4 miles. While others from the 1985 foal crop, such as Forty Niner, Risen Star, Seeking the Gold, Brian's Time, Private Terms, Proper Reality, and Regal Classic, accomplished much more on the track, Dynaformer achieved his stardom at stud.

Private Terms, a winner of nine stakes and the sire of Soul of the Matter and Afternoon Deelites, was recently pensioned. Forty Niner, a champion at 2 and a proven sire of sires, is having fertility problems after a very successful career at stud here and in Japan. Risen Star, winner of the Preakness and Belmont Stakes and a champion at 3, died in 1998 at age 13. Sent to Japan shortly after his racing career was over, Brian's Time became one of Japan's greatest stallions and was the most significant American-bred export before Sunday Silence. Seeking the Gold, like Dynaformer, is still going strong at 21. He has been a prominent stallion since his first crop reached the races, siring such standout performers as Dubai Millennium, Seeking the Pearl, Heavenly Prize, Catch the Ring, Flanders, Gold Tiara, Meiner Love, Pleasant Home, Dream Supreme, and Cash Run.

Descendants of Golden Trail

Dynaformer and Brian's Time are a product of the immensely successful Darby Dan female family tracing to blue hen Golden Trail. Bred to Graustark, Golden Trail produced stakes-placed Kelley's Day (third in the Gazelle Handicap), the dam of Brian's Time. Kelley's Day also produced stakes winner Ellie's Moment and stakes-placed Rebounding Thrill, Floramera, and Storm Day, a freshman stallion standing in Louisiana.

Golden Trail also produced three full sisters to Kelley's Day: stakes winner Java Moon, stakes-placed Autumn Moon (third in the Acorn Stakes), and stakes-placed Outward Sunshine. Java Moon was the dam of All My Memories, who was the dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Memories of Silver. Java Moon also produced Best of Memories, dam of Sir Barton Stakes winner Best Minister; stakes-placed Loose Cannon; and Lover's Moon, dam of stakes winners Naskra's Return and Moon Up TC. Outward Sunshine produced champion grass horse Sunshine Forever (Roberto).

Golden Trail was also the dam of stakes winners Gleaming Light, Sylvan Place, and stakes-placed Meadow Stream, but her most important daughter was On the Trail, an unraced filly by speed influence Olympia.

On the Trail produced Darby Creek Road (Roberto), a stakes winner at 2, 3, and 4, on dirt and turf. On the Trail's other foals include Regal Road, the second dam of 2001 Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos. Her 1978 foal by His Majesty was Andover Way, whose multiple stakes victories included the Top Flight, Next Move, Busher, and Beugay handicaps, and the Twilight Tear Stakes. She also finished second in the Apple Blossom behind Track Robbery and third in the Athenia Handicap behind De La Rose and Noble Damsel. Andover Way produced Alvear, the dam of Offlee Wild, who won the Suburban and Massachusetts handicaps and Holy Bull Stakes; stakes winner White Bridle; Personal Glory, dam of stakes winner Supremo; and Dynaformer.

Because of his success as a stallion, Dynaformer is now receiving the best mares of his career. Dynaformer's best runners have been Barbaro, Ocean Silk, McDynamo, Perfect Drift, Riskaverse, Film Maker, Sand Springs, Critical Eye, Starrer, Vergennes, Collect the Cash, and Dynever, but his best may be yet to come.

The following is a sampling of Dynaformer's current crop of 84 2-year-olds:
